Teder en gewelddadig, dramatisch en soms pijnlijk grappig. In Narrow Spaces staat de liefde tussen mannen centraal. Een expressionistische voorstelling over de schoonheid en complexiteit van liefde, in tekst, beeld, dans en live muziek.

Vier jonge mannen wonen in een afgelegen dorp waar de tijd geen vat op lijkt te hebben. In deze beklemmende en religieuze wereld zijn ze tot elkaar veroordeeld. Allemaal hopen ze op iets groters dan wat de werkelijkheid ze te bieden heeft. Ze zijn op zoek naar intimiteit, liefde en bestaansrecht. De jongens hebben een lange historie en langzamerhand wordt duidelijk hoe hun levens met elkaar zijn verknoopt.

Narrow Spaces is geïnspireerd op het werk van de Amerikaanse schrijver James Purdy. De ironie uit Purdy’s werk loopt als een rode draad door het stuk. Nic Bruckman (Bleeding Love, Kogelvis) schreef de nieuwe tekst. In Narrow Spaces worden de scherpe en droogfeitelijke dialogen afgewisseld met ‘over the top’ barokke, theatrale en muzikale scènes.

TOUR 2023-2024

Het maakproces van Narrow Spaces kende een lang voortraject en was verdeeld over verschillende residentieweken in Grand Theatre Groningen. Sinds de zomer van 2022 waren er verschillende tussentijdse presentaties van nieuwe spel-, dans- en muziekscènes in Grand Theatre en op andere locaties, zoals Festival Noorderzon en Schouwburg Ogterop (als onderdeel van het programma STORMRAM).

Op vrijdag 28 april 2023 is Narrow Spaces in première gegaan in Grand Theatre Groningen, na een try-out op 26 april, en een derde voorstelling op zaterdag 29 april. De tournee van Narrow Spaces loopt door tot in het seizoen 2023-2024.

Tender and violent, dramatic, and at times painfully funny. Narrow Spaces revolves around the love between men. An expressionist and poetic play about the beauty and complexity of love, with dance and live music.

Four young men live in a remote village where time doesn’t seem to exist. In an oppressive and religiously-intolerant world the men are condemned: condemned to love each other. They all long for something greater than reality has to offer them; they are searching for intimacy and the right to exist. The four of them share a long history and gradually it becomes clear how their lives are intertwined.

Narrow Spaces is inspired by the work of American writer James Purdy. The irony of Purdy's writings is an important foundation of this theatre piece. Writer Nic Bruckman (Bleeding Love, Pufferfish) created the new text for this play. Narrow Spaces switches between sharp and factual dialogues, and 'over the top' baroque, theatrical and musical scenes.

TOUR 2023-2024

The creation process of Narrow Spaces had a long preliminary phase with various residency weeks in Grand Theatre Groningen. Since the summer of 2022, there have been several short presentations of new theatre, dance and music scenes in Grand Theatre and at other locations, such as Festival Noorderzon and Schouwburg Ogterop (as part of the STORMRAM programme).

On Friday 28 April 2023, Narrow Spaces premiered at Grand Theatre Groningen, after a try-out on 26 April, and a third performance on Saturday 29 April. The Narrow Spaces tour continues into the 2023-2024 season.
